Valentine’s Day – that celebration of love, romance, and Catholic martrydom – is almost here. Whether you cherish it or despise it, you can’t really get away from it, so we asked a few of our favorite bands to share their own experiences. Funny, bitter, sad, romantic, tragically awkward…they didn’t hold back. So if you’re dreading V-Day, read on! You’re not alone.

THE KOXX are a bunch of charming party animals in addition to being electro rock freaks, so we were surprised to hear about their Valentine’s Day plans; that is, their lack of them. Turns out that even downlow mofos like Hyunsong, Sooryun, Saron, and Sunbin have their share of love troubles. Girls, so elusive, Oriental or not. The only non-responder was baby-faced keyboardist Shaun. His silence makes us think that at least somebody in THE KOXX might be strumming guitar in a sea of candles come Valentine’s Day. But as for the rest of them, ladies, listen to what they have to say, and then you can direct msg your consolation to them on Twitter!
1. What’s your most memorable/worst/funniest Valentine’s Day date?
사론 : 안타깝게도 딱히 기억에 남는 발렌타인데이가 없다. 이제부터라도 만들고 싶다. 어려운 질문이네.
Saron: Well, I don’t have any memorable/worst/funniest Valentine Day yet. Hope I can have one soon. This is quite difficult question to me.
현송 : 매년 재미없었다. 금년에는 뭐라도 기억할 만한 것이 있으면 좋겠다.
Hyunsong: There was no fun at every year’s Valentine day. Hope I can have any memorable one this year.
선빈 : 나 역시도 기억에 남는 발렌타인데이가 없다. 내게는 그저 형식적인 날 중 하나로 기억되고 있으니 말이다.
Sunbin: I don’t have any memory. It’s just another day to me. Well, I used to enjoy Valentine days when I was in School but no big deal.
수륜 : 19살 때까지 연애한 적이 없었다. 나에게 있어 19살때의 발렌타인데이는 최고였다. 그 때 난 처음으로 사귄 여자와 함께 밤에 공원에서 데이트를 했다. 엄청나게 떨면서 첫 키스를 하려고 다가가다가 그녀의 눈을 보자 다리에 힘이풀려 그냥 그녀를 안고 말았다. 그러자 그녀가 그런 내 모습이 귀엽다고 말하며 키스해주었다. 얼마 지나지 않아 그녀와 헤어졌지만 그 때의 발렌타인데이가 가장 기억에 남는다. 음… 이걸로 곡을 써야겠다.
Sooryun: When I was 19 years old. I hadn’t dated any girls until then. But my 19th Valentine day was the greatest. I dated a girl for the first time. We went to the park at night and I tred to kiss her – I was very very nervous. I looked her eyes, and my feet just fell off. So, I just hugged her. I was so naïve and she said, “you are so lovely” then she kissed me. After few months, we broke up anyway. So it was so memorable. Hmm…I might decide to write a song about this someday.
2. What is the most hated Valentine’s Day tradition in your country?
사론 : 예전에는 발렌타인데이에 여자가 남자에게 초콜릿을 주고, 화이트데이에 반대로 남자가 여자에게 초콜릿을 주었던 것으로 기억되는데, 요즘엔 여자나 남자나 발렌타인데이 때 주는 것 같다. 어렸을 땐 이런 방식이 좀 복잡하다고생각했다. 초콜릿을 주는 게 싫다. 난 사실 초콜릿을 별로 좋아하지 않는다.
Saron: I remembered old days…girls used to give chocolate to boys and boys give chocolate to girls at White day (March 14th). When I was young, this was quite complicated to me. Anyway, I don’t like giving or getting chocolates. Because I don’t like chocolates
현송 : 한국에는 3월에 남자가 사랑하는 사람에게 선물을 하는 이상한 습관이 있다. 말은 그렇지만 남자는 2월에도, 3월에도 여자에게 선물을 줘야 한다. 자신의 여자가 화내는 것을 보고 싶지 않다면.
Hyunsong: In Korea, a man gives a present to his beloved at March. Strange tradition. But that’s just a word. Men give presents to girls on February’s Valentine’s day and March’s White day, and unless you don’t do this, your Korean girlfriend will be going into a sulk.
선빈 : 한국에선 매월 14일이 기념일이다. 마음을 표현하는데 정해진 날에만 하는 것이 이상하다.
Sunbin: In Korea, every 14th day of month becomes a memorable day, because of commercial reasons. It is strange when we express our love on every same day a year.
수륜 : 다른 나라는 어떤지 잘 모르겠지만, 개인적으로 배보다 배꼽이 더 큰 선물이 싫다.
Sooryun: I don’t know how the other countries enjoy Valentine’s day. But I am sure that I dislike the present which has bigger package than the contents, like the smallest chocolate within a huge teddy bear thing.
3. If you really did want to impress someone on Valentine’s Day, what would you do?
사론 : 금괴 위에 초콜릿을 발라 선물한다.
Saron: Bring a gold bar and paint it with chocolates.
현송 : 촛불로 하트를 그리고, 그 안에서 기타를 치며 노래를 부른다.
Hyunsong: I will sing and play guitar, in the middle of heart shaped candles.
선빈 : 진심이 중요하겠지. 직접 식사를 요리하고, 세레나데를 준비하겠다. 초콜릿은 얹어 놓을 뿐.
Sunbin: Frank feeling is important. I will cook a dinner for her and sing a serenade. Chocolate is just on the table. I mean, chocolate is not the big deal for my Valentine day.
수륜 : 추억을 만든다는 것은 어렵다. 그래서 잘 모르겠다.
Sooryun: It is so difficult to make an impression on someone. So I don’t know what I would do.
4. If you HAD to pick the most romantic song ever, what would pick and why?
사론 : Justice – Valentine
금괴가 묻은 초콜릿과 저스티스라면 달콤할 수 밖에 없다
Saron: Justice’s “Valentine”
Justice’s music and a chocolate gold bar must be sweet.
현송 : The Cranberries – “Linger”
제목이 기억나진 않지만 아담 샌들러의 어떤 영화에 굉장히 감동적인 장면에 삽입되었던 곡이다. 그 장면을 생각하면서 항상 이 노래를 로맨틱한 노래라고 생각해왔는데, 막상 가사는 좀 어둡더라. 뭐, 나에게 있어 발렌타인데이는 항상즐겁지 않았으니, 딱 맞아떨어진다.
Hyunsong: The Cranberries’ “Linger”
I remembered Adam Sandler’s movie, and one of the scenes playing this song. That scene was so touching and I believed this song is very romantic. But actually, lyrics are not that romantic, even in mood. But my Valentine day was not happy all the time, so it can be a perfect Valentine Day song to me.
선빈 : Diane Birch – “Nothing But A Miracle”
기분 좋은 설렘이 있는 곡. 아, 풋풋하던 나의 어린 시절이여.
Sunbin: Diane Birch’s “Nothing But A Miracle”
This song has good feeling, like I used to feel when I was child.
수륜 : Dave Brubeck – “Audrey”
이런 분위기의 곡은 많지만, 이 곡은 Dave Brubeck이다.
Sooryun: Dave Brubeck’s “Audrey”
There are many songs that sound like this song. But this is a genuine Dave Brubeck track.
